Introducing Contego Segment Hunter: a six-part video series

We’re stoked to introduce an exciting new online video series titled ‘Contego Segment Hunter’. As the name suggests the series is all about Strava Segments. We’ll be looking for the gnarliest, toughest or just plain coolest sections of road, dirt or trail to unleash our chosen challenger on.

Untitled design (15)

For the first season of this six-part series we’ll be focussing on areas within the Western Cape, but from there it’s all about some country-wide segment smashing. Take a look at the intro video below where our host for the series, Ollie Munnik (aka. Pinner), takes us through some of the details.

Contego Segment Hunter – Intro Video

How will it work?

  • The Segment: A suitable segment will be chosen for each episode based on your nominations.
  • The Challenger: We’ll choose a suitable challenger for the segment: A pro, an amateur or person of interest.
  • The Preview: Once we have #1 and #2 sorted the “Pinner” will take us through the segment in some detail to help you set some PBs and give a us preview of what’s to come.
  • The Episode: The final showdown. Our challenger lays it all on the line to take on the segment and bask in the glory of virtual winnings.

What was that about prizes?

It’s not all about bragging rights for our soon-to-be video super stars. We want YOU to get involved and for your efforts we’ve got some great prizes on offer:

  • Grand Prize: R 30 000 unit trust investment from our sponsors Contego
  • A range of spot prizes to be announced as the series kicks off the series (among them is a set of shiny new South Industries #Handgemaak carbon rims)

Bikes of the Epic: Adriaan Louw’s SwiftCarbon Evil Twin

Adriaan Louw is riding his trusted SwiftCarbon Evil Twin in the 2016 Absa Cape Epic. Team Contego SwiftCarbon took the opportunity to come up with a custom paint scheme. They allowed Adriaan to create his own design and enlisted the services of Bogus Designs to pull it off.

The bike features a custom tuned Fox Float Factory shock which Adriaan runs at 90 psi. Adriaan uses a Thomson seatpost and titanium saddle rails for reliability while mounting and dismounting during the race. The South Industries rims provide a wider profile than many cross-country race rims allowing Adriaan to comfortably run his Continental Race King tyres at around 18 to 20 psi.

Trail runners or mountain bikers: are you ready to see who’s fastest?

Trail runners or mountain bikers: are you ready to see who’s fastest?

6 Laps, head-to-head biting handlebars and kicking up dirt.

It’s almost time to settle a pesky argument between trail runners and mountain bikers. On 22 August at the Meerendal Trail Centre, you’ll see the Team Contego Trail Running Team take on the Team Contego Professional Mountain Bike Team. It’s going to be a showdown that holds no punches.

This isn’t your usual run vs. ride duel. No, we’re making both teams run and ride head-to-head for 6-laps. It starts off with two laps (+-5km) of trail running followed immediately by a transition to a four-lap (+- 10km) MTB leg in an exciting duel over 60min.

Our trail runners don’t ride and our mountain bikers don’t run so you’re assured of all the ingredients of a battle not to be missed. See you on Saturday!

Who’s faster: Trail runners or mountain bikers?

We invite you to witness the race that settles the argument.

On 22 August, the Contego Trail Running Team goes head-to-head against the Contego Professional Mountain Bike Team at the Meerendal Trail Centre. In what we’re sure is to be an epic battle of chirps, jests and (most importantly) full-on racing, just 60 minutes is all we’ll need to crown the winning discipline.

6-laps, starting off with two laps of trail running followed immediately by four laps of mountain biking will have the teams pitted against each other. And you’ll be at the centre of the action right till the nail-biting finish of this never-before seen concept.

Young Guns with An Eye On The Future

On a balmy summer evening this week, the Contego Pro MTB Team was officially launched at SWIFT CARBONS’s Cape Town showroom. Team riders include Adriaan Louw and Lourens Luus who are both in their early twenties and biting at the bit to get cracking in their quest to become South Africa’s best marathon mountain bikers. This won’t happen overnight they candidly admit, but the launch of the Contego Pro MTB Team signifies the beginning of an exciting new chapter in their professional careers.

During an informal Q&A session at the launch, Neil Gardiner, SWIFT CARBON’s communication and marketing director and the evening’s MC, chatted to the lighties about their aspirations, dreams as well as their direct involvement in the development of the bike they will race this year, SWIFT CARBON’s brand new Evil Twin 29er dual suspension.

Ironically Louw and Luus have been competing against each other since their junior years, however, in 2015 they will join forces to create a formidable partnership that is based on a shared will to win, tireless work ethic and importantly, a friendship that stretches beyond the time they spend together on the bikes in tight and bright lycra.

In 2015 the duo will embark on a five-year journey that they believe will take them to the top echelons of marathon stage racing, and, if all goes according to plan, the top step of the podium at the world’s biggest and most badass stage race, the ABSA Cape Epic. This they say, is unequivocally their ultimate goal, to be the first South African pairing to win the coveted yellow jersey.

JC Louw, Contego CEO, was equally as excited about the team’s future. Contego have come on board as the title sponsor with the explicit goal to support the team in the long run as they build the foundations for success in 2015 and beyond. Another keen interest from Contego’s perspective is the chance for Louw and Luus to transfer their skills, dedication and professionalism to the next generation of riders. Developing a passion among school kids to firstly, get into mountain biking and secondly, to venture into the pain-cave when the time is right is what Contego is ultimately looking to achieve through their partnership with the team.

With South Africa’s notoriously busy race calendar, the team will be strict in keeping their focus aimed at events that build towards their primary goals, which in the short term include this weekend’s Tankwa Trek and Cape Epic.

Keep up with Louw and Luus’ journey through the pain-cave by following @teamcontego on twitter and CONTEGO PRO MTB Team on Facebook.

High Fives. Bear Hunting season just opened.
